This year was our first experience in using a blog to help build our global entrepreneur community. We only really started in anger in late Oct in the lead up to the finals. Now in 2011 we are starting to think about what we need to do as we extend the program into a number of new exciting markets, The folks at wordpress kindly provide the following to help us understand what works\doesn’t. So here is the overall result – like a healthcheck for 2010.

Crunchy numbers

A Boeing 747-400 passenger jet can hold 416 passengers. This blog was viewed about 11,000 times in 2010. That’s about 26 full 747s.

In 2010, there were 41 new posts, not bad for the first year! There were 45 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 8mb. That’s about 4 pictures per month.

The busiest day of the year was August 18th with 162 views. The most popular post that day was London .

The solution
New technology from LindCom measures and reports the contents of tanks, silos and cooling systems and report measurements over the Internet.

In the future, companies within the agriculture, oil, and food industries will be able to obtain clear economic and environmental benefits by using a new reporting technology from LindCom. Each year, companies in these areas waste considerable resources to measure and fill the tanks and silos or control temperatures. Due to poor technology, today companies lack a clear overview of their storage facilities making it difficult to purchase the right amounts of raw commoditties at the right time to store and refill silos and oil tanks.

LindCom’s new full service IT reporting systsem optimizes corporate logistics for storage and distribution of commodities. Using a proven and safe technology companies can monitor and their holdings of tanks, silos etc round the clock via the Internet. Users receive ongoing information about the contents and conditions in tanks, silos and cold storage. If a silo is almost empty, the IT system will automatically alert the user that it is time to fill up the silo.

The company LindCom was started in 2005 and resides at Scion-DTU in Lyngby in a high-tech dynamic entrepreneurial environment. Not 1 but 2 – Silicon Valley lives up to it’s name

Finally getting to write about an amazing 2 days spent in San Mateo, Menlo Park and surrounding areas.

I had the pleasure of hosting iFind for the mentoring day on Wednesday and met with all of folks who kindly gave up their time for nothing more than the chance to maybe work with these very early stage companies in the future. The big takeaway for me was to see how Neil, the sole founder from Canada (who had never pitched in front of investors) before grew over the 2 days to the showcase event where he had the crowd entralled in his vision to use technology to track livestock and prevent disease outbreaks.

A couple of things really struck me over the couple of days

1. The knowledge and insight across the whole community is amazing – they just know how to build companies from legal to team to technology to finance. The whole ecosystem feeding itself and understanding the roles the various actors play.

2. Respect for the entrepreneur and taking risks. It’s OK to fail (in the right way). How often do you hear that in Europe and other parts of the world.

Anyway, these are some of the cultural reasons why it is not possible to simply replicate silicon valley which is build on social connections and understanding.

The upshot of the mentoring and pitching sessions showed how even experience entrepreneurs can up their game with the help of experienced heads.

So to the awards. It seems the judges couldn’t decided on 1 overall winner and so declared that Silicon Valley is indeed so special that that 2 companies should share the award. So the winners from SmartCamp Silicon Valley are

Carecloud and Streetline.

The judges had a really difficult job picking just 5. The valley lived up to it’s reputation for the most interesting, disruptive and somewhat weird solutions. We never thought we would find technology being used to tracking cattle in the Amazon rainforest: Here goes:
